The Matera Lectures on Radio 3
Lightness, Quickness, Exactitude, Visibility and Multiplicity. These are the values of Italo Calvino’s 'American Lectures' followed by Radio 3 in the Matera Lectures, with the original format in the hope of inspiring the audience to tune into a monthly broadcast throughout 2019 and warm the heart of the city.
Starting with a key word artists, philosophers, scientists and thinkers will animate the talks with Radio 3’s typical combination of simplicity and precision, in an ongoing mission to spread and share knowledge, and shed light on the topics introduced in the dossier that helped Matera become European Capital of Culture.
In a parallel programme on Radio 3, fundamental themes of culture will be an opportunity for debate about the transformation of this city with its problematic history, but which with quickness and exactitude has worked on its multiplicity, to achieve Calvino’s lightness, ready to face the challenges about the relationship between the past and the future, and the necessary ingredients for the community to decide how to rewrite its destiny: by capitalising on its assets – traditions, technology, the arts – in a bid to enhance and refine a sense of citizenship and community in local residents.
The Matera Lectures will also strengthen the link between radio and Matera, which will be the venue for the nine year of the Three Days of Materadio, held from 13th to 15th September 2019, and a festive occasion for continuing to build the cultural and artistic heritage of the city together.
