Antonio Nicoletti
Engineer and PhD in Urban and Territorial Planning, for about twenty-five years he has been dealing with sustainability and innovation of development processes, especially those characterised by the valorisation of environmental, cultural and creative resources.
From December 2019 to date, as General Director of the Regional Agency for Territorial Development of Basilicata, with the Regional Tourism Marketing Strategic Plan, he has adopted innovation as a goal and method for territorial promotion. He has introduced contemporary narrative languages such as comics and video games, and tools such as Artificial Intelligence and virtual and augmented reality into the Lucanian tourism sector. He has initiated projects such as Roots-in, the first International Tourism Exchange, and “Tourism of Passions”. With a strong focus on the internationalisation of the market, under his leadership the foreign tourism grew by around 60 per cent from 2019.
An expert in integrated projects for national and international funding, he has worked on various urban projects; among others, the Strategic Plan for the Bari metropolitan area and, for the city of Matera, the Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Plan (PISUS), the “City Plan”, the Plan for the Development of Suburbs, the Strategic Document for Integrated Territorial Investments PO-FESR 2014-2020, the Master Plan for Matera 2019, and the “Matera Digitale” programme.
From August 2015 to December 2019 he was manager for the Municipality of Matera, with competences related to strategic planning, urban innovation and management of funding related to the European Capital of Culture 2019. In this role, for the Municipality he was Sole Contact Person for the ‘CIS Matera’, Technical Contact Person for the ‘ITI Urban Development’ in Matera and the Bari-Matera 5G project, member of the Strategic Steering Committee between the Municipality and the National Research Council for the HUB for Research and Technological Innovation, and designed the House of Emerging Technologies in Matera, the first centre of its kind in Italy, prometed by the Ministry of Economic Development.
Former visiting scholar at the Global Urban Research Unit of the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, he has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Basilicata and lectures at LUM University in the disciplines of marketing and culture applied to urban design and management.
He has delved into issues related to the design and management of cultural and tourism systems, working, among others, with the Zétema Foundation in Matera on the implementation of the Cultural District of the Rupestrian Habitat of Basilicata and, with the Region of Apulia, on the definition of management programmes for “Environmental and Cultural Systems”.
He designed and directed the start-up of the Centre for Youth Creativity “Casa Cava”, in Matera, a place of excellence for the development of performing arts at the service of the city and the territory.
He frequently deals with innovation applied to different sectors. As part of the Start-Cup Basilicata initiative, he won the “Cultural and Creative Industry Prize” and the TIM Open Jelastic Cloud Prize in 2019 (ICT sector).
From February 2025, he is the General Director of the Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation.
